Hurricane Irma - Quick update

Well it has certainly been a while since I posted anything here, but with Hurricane Irma bearing down on the Caribbean and CONUS, I thought it might be a good idea to post again.  I will be posting here on my blog updates for internet streaming resources from in and around the path of Hurricane Irma.  I will announce these posts over on my Twitter feed:  @W4LVH so be sure to follow me there if you want to know when new streaming links are posted.

We will all get through this storm together and hopefully we can come out the other side safe and no worse for wear!

In preparation for the end of GlobalNet in December, I have already changed my Twitter username to @W4LVH.  Current followers shouldn't notice any difference.

Monitoring Times and the future of GlobalNet

While we know the discontinuation of MT, with our December issue, will be a disappointment to our readers and writers alike, we realize that a combination of a down-turned economy, as well as the ready availability of free listening and technical information on the Internet, has reduced sales and subscriptions throughout the market place. I would like to thank you personally for your knowledge, your dependability, and your professionalism in making MT the publication that is most often referred to in the radio monitoring hobby. It is a legacy that we have all inherited."

It is truly a sad day for radio and for me personally.  I literally grew up with MT, with both my mother and father being such an integral part of the magazine throughout its history.  My own contributions to the magazine started as feature writer, i was a frequency monitor for the center section and finally became a full-fledged monthly columnist in August of 2008 when I took over the reigns with GlobalNet.

I have so many memories that are tied directly to this magazine and Grove as a whole.  I remember working the Grove booth at MT Conventions in the early 90s where I had a chance to meet so many fellow-hobbyists.  I remember holding the first copy of the magazine format MT, after years of being in tabloid format.  I remember Satellite Times, and the promise of what could have been for that magazine.  I remember the first time i walked into the offices in Brasstown and met so many wonderful people that helped three strangers from cajun country feel right at home in the mountains.

So, while MT will be taking it's bow at the end of the year, some of you might want to know what becomes of GlobalNet.

You may have seen an earlier post which discussed how I have been running a side-blog of my own personal radio pursuits called Upstate RF.  I will be re-purposing this Web site to use for that use.  Look for updates in coming weeks on my progress in the transition.

While this blog will no longer be streaming-centric, you might find posts regarding mediumwave DX, amateur radio and shortwave too.  I have let my column be the main source of information, so that the readers of Monitoring Times always had my "best material".  I will be incorporating that now into this blog.

You can still expect to see information from both Larry and Gayle at their respective blogs (links can be found from this blog).   I will still be on Twitter, although the username might change.

While the book on Monitoring Times may be closing, the last chapter has not yet been written on GlobalNet.  If you are a streaming enthusiast and enjoy Internet Radio, television and new technologies, stay tuned to this blog for future developments.

Thank you for your support over the last five years to this column, and for the past 33 years to my family.  We have shared our love for this hobby without question, and you have responded in kind time-after-time.

Upstate RF - The personal blog of W4LVH

I love sharing information with my readers, not only in the pages of Monitoring Times each month, but also here on the GlobalNet blog.  I haven't been very active lately, but it's not for lack of interest.  As I know many are these days, been feeling like too little butter stretched over so much bread (10 points for those that can spot where that quote comes from!) - which doesn't leave a lot of extra time for much extra work.

But, all work and no play makes Loyd a grumpy dude.  Internet Radio isn't the only way I enjoy spending my time or in pursuit of the DX hobby.  Many of you know my love of DXing on the mediumwave bands and pursuing rare DX there.  I have also been bit by the Ham radio bug pretty hard.  I first was licensed back in 2004 but due to an unfortunate act of nature taking out almost my entire ham radio station, had to spend some time away from the hobby until I was recently able to get back on to HF.

Have a new personal blog up - not just Internet Radio related, but more of my personal thoughts and happenings in my pursuit of the DX hobby.  If you want to know what's up at the QTH, check out Upstate RF - W4LVH's Radio Blog

Really enjoying the digital modes, so expect to see a healthy dose of information and postings about PSK31, RTTY, Olivia, JT65, JT9, SSTV and more.  It should come as no surprise that the Internet Radio guy would be all about digital HF radio, right?

For my fellow hams that are readers - look for me on the bands.....have some QSLs to send out, and maybe soon, version 2 will be coming out.  A little sneak peek can be found below.

W4LVH is back on the air!

Hey everyone!  Good news, W4LVH is back on the air on the amateur radio HF bands.  Lots of contacts already, in only my first week of working the bands.  Printing up some QSLs, should have those out soon to anyone I owe a card to.  Also, for the folks on the 3905 CCN and OMISS nets, I am sending in envelopes to the bureaus today and tomorrow, should be good there soon.

Working on an ICOM IC-746, running 100 watts into a W5GI "Mystery Antenna".  Great signal reports so far, pretty happy with the performance.  More details to come, but all my fellow Hams out there, hope to see you in the log soon!!
